Awake: Giving the Feeling a Voice

August 14, 20262 min read

Some thoughts don’t fade when the room goes dark.

They get louder.

They circle, sharpen, and turn sleep into something you begin to avoid.

There are nights when exhaustion isn’t enough to quiet the mind. Your body wants to rest, but your thoughts keep moving, replaying old images, creating new fears, and refusing to loosen their grip.

After a while, sleeplessness becomes more than being tired.

Fear and exhaustion begin to bleed into hopelessness. The weight of everything running through your head can become so heavy that giving up starts to feel like the only way to make it stop.

That is where Awake came from.

It isn’t really a song about insomnia.

It’s about being trapped inside a mind that won’t let you rest. It’s about the point where the thoughts become so relentless that continuing to carry them feels almost impossible.

The circumstances behind that feeling are different for everyone.

For some people, it may come from trauma. For others, abuse, loss, fear, instability, or experiences they cannot simply leave behind. The details may change, but the darkness can feel remarkably similar.

You are exhausted.

You want everything inside your head to become quiet.

But closing your eyes only seems to make it louder.

I didn’t write Awake to explain that feeling.

I didn’t write it because I had discovered an answer.

I wrote it to give that feeling a voice.

Sometimes music can say what ordinary conversation cannot. It can hold fear, anger, grief, and hopelessness without trying to clean them up or turn them into something easier to hear.

That was important to me with this song.

I didn’t want to soften the experience or pretend that every dark moment arrives with a lesson attached to it. Sometimes a person is simply trying to survive what is happening inside their own mind.

Awake lives in that moment.

The body is tired.

The mind is still running.

And somewhere between the two is a person wondering how much longer they can keep going.

The song doesn’t offer an easy answer.

It simply gives the darkness somewhere to speak.

And sometimes, giving a feeling a voice is where the silence finally begins to break.
